The Vert District - W. Wells St.

The Vert district introduces west Downtown Milwaukee to a new eco neighborhood. W. Wells St. is a central connection for Westtown, bridging the Marquette Univesity campus to the west and leading to the newly rennovated Baird Center. Directly north of Wells St. is Macarthur Square, an underused public plaza meant to serve as a gathering place east of the courthouse. The Palaza is disconnected from the city due to the grade change cause by the parking structure and I-43 access ramps.

The Vert district was designed in collaboration with Burke Adams  in 2021 for Carolyn Esswein’s Urban Design Studio.

A section view of the recommended bridge park addition added to Wells Street bridge which crosses over I-94 west. Shows the layers of activity provided by architectural and landscaping additions to this connection.
A redesign of Clas park continues increasing east and west connectivity throughout the vert district. A new cafe serves the court house, new apartments and nearby businesses.
Each garden can be curated and syronized with programming from the milwaukee county parks, libraries and the urban ecology center.
